I dont know why you think youd have to make a new profile every time. Unless somethings changed that Im not aware of(havent used TS in a good while), you're able to join the server, join a channel, and talk. Not once did I ever create a profile, wasnt even aware that there was such a thing.

When you have voice chat on, you *ONLY* hear people in your party/group. Period.
You *DO NOT* hear gold sellers and random idle chatter in town, or anyone outside your group. No one can "spam" you in voice chat, unless they're in your party, and that's never happend in thousands of hours of playing (for me).
In my experience, in-game chat has *NEVER* caused lag, on any system, even when running on slow hardware like a laptop. A program like Vent is MORE LIKELY to cause lag than a built-in system, because it requires running a second program that can not directly coordinate with the game.
Voice chat is essential to coordinating complex activities among 10-40 people, and it can be very useful even in 5-8 man groups.
The *ONLY* drawback I have found to voice chat is that, very rarely, there could be a problem caused for female players. I have four female gamers in this house (my being the sole male of the domain); over the course of three years playing MMOs, we have had ONE instance of verbal sexual harassment while in voice chat. And that guy was booted from the guild instantly.
Voice chat is used for difficult, end-game, hardcore play, where people are serious about completing the mission.
|
In my experience, its been the opposite. Ive tried in-game voice chat in LotRO, and the Unreal Tournament games, as well as a couple others, and always had to turn it off to cut down on lag. I used TS alot when I was playing Battlefield 1942 years ago, with no problems at all.

Somehow I doubt there will be a voice equivalent of Local chat. Most likely there will be party channels, and maybe guild/alliance channels.

Thankfully not likely to happen in GW as I don't PUG much anymore at all.

Then you tell them to go fark themselves with a retractable baton, just like in real life.
In all seriousness, voice chat is incredibly useful, and vent only works for well-organized groups. It's nice to have around for PuGs, at least in the games I've played with it.
Of course, this also opens up the possibility of voice macro...

What would be the best idea, imo, if voice chat is a guild service that can be bought and only activated by the party leader when all members of the party are part of the same guild/alliance. "Town" voice chat will never happen....too much lag and dickheads to worry about.

There may need to be some parental controlled password for VoIP. Or some other layer that help separate kids from mature mouthed adults. Several of the guilds I did raid with in WoW would have made a sailor blush. The triple-X banter from both men and women, had someone been recording, would have secured a court victory for internet predation--had a minor been present.
Other than that, VoIP when done right is one of the best ways to socialize, and get to know real people and make some lasting, real-life friends.

Integrated voice chat in GW2 would present a couple of concerns for me.
(1) Obviously, there is no "filter" for it, as with text chat. (Other than not using it, of course.) As I normally solo, this probably would not be a big issue. But in party situations ...
(2) I actually like the curt, succinct text-only dialog you see in groups now. Voice chat seems like it would encourage ... babble.
(3) Doesn't integrated voice chat add a level of pressure/bias for players to use it--as in "turn it on for this PUG or you're gonna get kicked"? So, for situations where you had to group, would you not also have to enable voice chat? How does this work in MMOs that already have IVC, such as WoW?
I can see that voice chat has advantages but, if it is offered as a feature of GW2, it would be nice if there were non-IVC districts or servers available for players who preferred not to use it and would also prefer playing with other players of like mind.

I think GW2 needs voicechat, I can't stand pugging with out it. Of course all the nick nacks (muting, volume, pitch) should come with it too.
If EA can provide voice chat for a small branch of its gaming products such as Battlefield, I don't see why not.

If it's open voice chat for all chat, it's a BAAAAAAAAD IDEA.
I am a member of the shrinking-yet-epic Team Fortress Classic fanbase. I'm big on the jolt.co.uk [FM] Fun Server, full of fun maps requiring puzzle solving etc bla bla bla. There is a kid named John97 who comes on just to annoy us, and he has the most annoying little whiney voice - worse than Danika's. I swear I just want to strangle him each time I hear it. Sure we mute him and the admins always show off their admin powers using him as a target, but still.
Even if we had an ignore option for voice chat in GW2, there will be a LOT of little 11 year olds running around. Even if they could be blocked, the concept is still there - that ANet is making their game easily attackable by the "pubeless".

It'd be a nice add, but some moderative fuctions would have to come with it
(party leader for example would get to mute/kick etc).

There is already some of that crap for places like UW/FoW. Most places, like in GW1, will not be hard enough that it would be necessary and quite frankly, in a group that forces you to use it is probably a group on the edge of failure anyways. May be a bit frustrating to be kicked but when you find a competent group and come back an hour or two later and still see those people complaining about bad pugs it makes it worth while.

Eh, if I was running a guild that used Vent, I would simply add a warning that minors are not permitted, same as I do with guild chat. Therefor they are to blame if they listen (or read the chat).

The option to use Vent/TS with people you want > the feature built-in requiring you to voice chat with everyone including some you may not.

Voice chat will, as said above, become some stupid excuse as to why you can't be let into a group.
BTW, why does ZoS require you to use Ventrilo or whatever - else you get a strike? Seems kinda harsh for a super famous and generous guild made by the earliest GW players and with some dev interaction. I'm not in ZoS nor am I seeking admittance, but just thinking of it seems kinda odd.
